Beginning with an old dial-up internet tone, Big Empty Feelings may create some techno-aural nostalgia in the listener. Those at the more senior end of generation Y’s spectrum may experience flashbacks to excitedly logging in to MSN Messenger; the birthplace of their dopamine-fuelled relationship with social media.
The song ponders the physical loneliness we can feel in a world that is increasingly lived online. The protagonist has trouble fitting in, finding themselves turning to “an app to relax” and complaining of being too disconnected to reciprocate romantic advances. The track features choirs and strings squeezed through modular synths underpinned by chunky synths amounting to something like Arcade Fire replacing half of their personnel with a synthetic counterpart.
